Live Kind Choose Happiness Unleash Learning
The first two weeks of school were spent getting to know each other. Several activities were completed for 5th graders and teachers to get to know one another. We welcome those back to Hilliard Crossing and celebrate having new students join us as well. We have been establishing a sense of community with our 5th grade.
What we have been up to…
Math: Students were pretested on place value concepts. We have learned some new problem solving games. Ask your child about playing with “FIAR” in class. This week we pretended to be evaluators for websites that create 5th grade math games. Your child reviewed two websites of his/her choice and gave recommendations, etc. for that game.
Reading: We are discovering the possibilities that books offer us by celebrating reading. Our chapter book read aloud, The One and Only Ivanis part of our journey each day. Ask your child about Ivan's journey.
Our read aloud books have included: Guess Again (ask your child about the significance of Grandpa Ned)
Do Unto Otters (helped establish our classroom expectations)
A Fine, Fine School (helped us develop what we wanted our classroom to be like)
I See a Song (We all bring our own backgrounds to books to discover meaning)
One (to remind us of the power each of us has to make a positive impact on others.)
-Our goals for the week included: beginning to record book titles and authors accurately, discovering how to quote books accurately, and how to respond to text using ORE (opinion, reason, and example/evidence)
Science: We are learning how to work in groups and negotiate with each other while reviewing what scientists do.
Social Studies: Our class is reviewing continents and oceans. We labeled our world map and had a quiz today (Friday). After we remember these features, it will help us to understand the areas of North and South America that will be studied this year.
Word Study: Students were pretested to determine the features that they were comfortable spelling and reveal areas where help is needed or where some students may need challenged.
